The scenic Wairoa awa (long water) with it's good accessibility, easy flowing water and interesting history offers a fun introduction to riverbugging close to Tauranga.
Our riverbug adventure starts with meeting the group at the council reserve by the Ruahihi Power Station, where we distribute the equipment and get changed. After a safety briefing we'll head downstream below the tailrace of the Ruahihi Power Sation which provides us with a short bubbly artificial rapid. There'll be fun games and initiative challenges to keep everyone entertained, and students will learn about local stories and conservation. Wildlife encounters are common on the river and we often see black swan and Canadian geese floating along ahead of us.
