RAPID BUG – WAIROA   *Sundays Only*
Half Day Riverbug Course $149

The Maori name Wairoa means long water. From its' source in Kaimai Ranges the Wairoa River flows west towards Tauranga where it empties into the sea. A history of volcanic activity poured lava into the riverbed, creating a river filled with boulders, chutes, drops and waves –  a whitewater playground perfect for learning riverbugging!

We use the lower part of the Wairoas' McLaren Falls whitewater section for our Rapid Bug Course, putting on the river at the halfway access. The river level is controlled by water release from the Lake McLaren dam on 26 Sundays from Spring – Autumn, our group size is limited to 5 participants per guide, so be sure to book early to reserve your place.

Our Rapid Bug – Wairoa Course is designed to teach you  the riverbug skills necessary to enable you to navigate Grade 3 whitewater. We spend time practicing the basics on the easier part of this section before taking on the more challenging rapids. You'll learn: paddling techniques, self rescue, river reading, teamwork and how to become self-reliant in whitewater. We carry our bugs (8kg) to and from the river, and may scout some rapids from the riverbank, so be prepared to walk over uneven ground and rocks.

Meeting place for the tour is 1443 State Highway 29, Tauriko, Lower Kaimai 3171.
